With tons of diet books out there, all claiming to be effective, it’s quite tricky to find something that will truly be helpful, especially if the contents of these books contradict each other. In my opinion, a good diet book is one that points out what’s bad for you so you can avoid them. This is what Grain Brain does, which puts it at the top of the list.

Written by Dr. David Perlmutter, the book provides a holistic take on what makes a person ill or healthy. Specifically, the book discusses the effect that carbohydrates have on the body, especially when it comes to the development of the brain. Ultimately, the book arrives at the conclusion that a high-fat, low-carb diet, coupled with exercise and enough sleep can improve your quality of life. Below are some of the main takeaways from the book. However, you must read the Grain Brain fully in order make the most of its contents.

What Lessons Can We Get From The Grain Brain?

1. Cholesterol itself is not bad.

 Most people fear cholesterol and that is understandable since high cholesterol is often linked to heart ailments. However, cholesterol per se is not the problem. The Grain Brain talks about the two kinds of cholesterol in the body, namely the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Simply put, LDL is the bad cholesterol, while HDL is the good one. The ratio of the HDL against your total amount of cholesterol is what’s crucial in avoiding the risk of heart ailments. The number of your total cholesterol, divided by your HDL, should yield an amount that is ideally at 3.5 or lower and should not go over 5.

There are certain foods people typically avoid for fear of having high cholesterol, such as eggs, butter and cheese. However, the book explains that eating lots of them won’t necessarily be harmful, but consuming low-quality eggs for instance, may be bad for you. Still, an important lesson that the book teaches is that your body has the ability to regulate your cholesterol levels, depending on your intake. Simply put, if you’ve consumed a lot of cholesterol, you body would produce less of it. The problem only arises when you overload the system. In primitive times, humans survived on a diet that consisted of 70% fats, which just goes to show that fats are mostly not detrimental to our health.

3. Quality of sleep has an effect on controlling hunger

 We already know that sleep improves the quality of life, but the Grain Brain allows us to understand this phenomenon even better. If you lack sleep, you might notice that you also feel more stressed and you become sickly. This can be attributed to a drop in the hormone leptin, which is caused by sleep deprivation. Leptin is responsible for the regulation of the body’s inflammatory response. It also has an effect on your hunger levels and cravings. A drop in leptin usually means a stronger appetite and a craving for carbohydrates.

Brain health is a serious matter since the rates of Alzheimer’s and Dementia are on the rise and it is never too early to protect yourself and your family from these diseases. The Grain Brain diet promotes good fat as a way to bolster brain function and Dr. Perlmutter believes that diets that are low in fat have debilitating effects on the brain.

 Grain Brain is a well-researched book that won’t overwhelm a reader with too much jargon, so it’s pretty easy to follow even for those who are not too familiar with scientific terms. Dr. Perlmutter provides a reader-friendly explanation for how grains affect the brain negatively. He also explains that something can be done in order to keep the brain sharp even as we age. The book is empowering in that it makes the readers understand that the factors that are involved in brain degeneration, specifically diet and exercise (or the lack thereof), can actually be managed.

 The book is also engaging since Dr. Perlmutter has written it with much conviction and you just can’t help but be convinced. Another unique thing about Grain Brain is that its focus is on overall health and not just on weight loss, which is refreshing, considering that a lot of the typical diet books out there obsess on merely achieving an ideal body figure. The book doesn’t tell you to reduce your food intake. Instead, it inspires you to revisit your diet, avoid processed foods and generally make healthier choices.

 Let’s face it. If you’re gotten so used to convenient but unhealthy food habits, it will be difficult to follow a healthy diet, at least in the beginning. The Grain Brain diet has its hurdles. After all, cutting back on carbs is a major step. On top of that, you will need to make an effort to avoid processed foods. There certainly are sacrifices to be made and you have to commit to your decision to reap the benefits. But it’s worth it and you’ll probably just find it challenging in the beginning. Once you get used to the Grain Brain diet, you will find that you feel healthier and sharper; you’ll wish you could’ve made that change sooner. You must read the Grain Brain if you are looking for a diet book that doesn’t just tell you the things to do, but also provides an explanation for why you should do them. Your body will thank you for it.

  1. Cholesterol is terrible for the heart because it gives individuals respiratory failure. I concur with you in the way that getting enough rest is important to control hunger, when I was consistently up throughout the night I feel so ravenous constantly and I cannot control my eating regimen. I became fat as a result of that sort of way of life till I transformed it. Haha

    1. I think people fail to realize that there is good and bad cholesterol. Good cholesterol or high density cholesterol is necessary for making cell membranes and hormones.

    Thanks for a great article and the review of cholesterol, I am is in the family of LDL, and HDL, yet I was never a lover of butter, milk, cheese or anything in the dairy family from childhood. But yes, cake, bread, and many other goodies made from carb, I consume a lot from small in age, and of course, all those are made with all the fatty ingredients.

    My experience on this topic regarding Grain Brain I have never heard of, but I will get a copy more insight on my health in cholesterol control. Also consuming more greens that grains.

I would love to know more about the good and the bad cholesterol. And what foods are for good cholesterol. Also I need to improve on my sleeping pattern.

  4. The Grain Brain is what I call my Bible! I couldn’t recommend it any better than you do.I have almost totally eliminated sugar, milk and gluten ( I am celiac ) from my diet. And the difference between then and now is enormous. I have written  a few articles myself on the topic ; as you will see several ones are corona related.   5. This is a great article about how a person can change their lifestyle in eating to become more healthy no matter what age you are. It is true that we were taught to eat more grains and stay away from fats. When we started to eat more grains thinking we were eating more healthy we were taking in more carbs and less proteins because our focus was trying to be healthy following what was being sold to us by food manufactures and probably health experts. Not only did I gain weight but I didn’t feel so healthy. Over time with studies it was discovered that we need more fats, of course healthy fats, and less grains and carbs, definitely more green vegetables to establish a better balance and better over all health. I have discovered this myself a few years ago. Not only do I feel better but I have also lost weight in the process.
